چکیده

The endemic tree Acacia koa is used to reforest abandoned agricultural lands in Hawaii. Growth may be constrained by soil infertility and toxic concentrations of aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn) in acidic Oxisols and Ultisols. The effects of phosphorus (P) fertilization at time of planting, soil type, and seed source on koa growth were studied for three years. Phosphorus, applied as triple superphosphate and at rates of at least 300 kg P ha−1, significantly increased height, basal stem diameter, crown volume, and aboveground wood biomass of trees from the local (Oahu) seed source, but not those from off island (Hawaii). Manganese toxicity in the Oxisol probably slowed growth of the off-site trees. The local seed source grew similarly in both soil types, but the survival rate was lower in the Ultisol, possibly due to its lower water-holding capacity. Increased growth due to fertilization suggested improved P status, but such improvement was not detected by foliar analysis.

Growth response of Acacia koa trees to thinning, grass control, and phosphorus fertilization in a secondary forest in Hawai‘i

Koa (Acacia koa A. Gray) is an endemic Hawaiian hardwood tree of high ecological, cultural and economic value. Despite its multiple values, research on the silviculture of koa has been minimal until recently because the preferred land-use was pasture for livestock, and logging was done mainly to facilitate and reduce the costs of conversion. This study examined growth response of selected poten...

Pathogenicity of Four Fusarium Species on Acacia Koa Seedlings

Fusarium isolates obtained from diseased koa plants, rhizosphere soil and seeds/seedcoats may or may not be pathogenic on young seedlings under greenhouse conditions. This includes isolates of F. oxysporum, the putative cause of koa wilt/dieback disease in Hawaii. We tested ten Fusarium isolates, comprising four different species, for their pathogenic potential on Acacia koa seedlings under gre...

Nursery Disease Notes Usda Forest Service Northern Region Forest Health Protection

Nine different Fusarium species were isolated from Acacia koa seeds, seedpods, seedling stem and root tissues, rhizosphere soil and soil surrounding roots of diseased trees. Fusarium oxysporum, the cause of koa dieback and wilt, was not isolated from seeds or seedpods but was found most commonly on roots and soil near diseased koa seedlings. Fusarium subglutinans was the most common species iso...

Genetic Variations of Acacia koa Seed, Seedling, and Early Growth Traits

Introduction Koa (Acacia koa Gray) is a native Hawaiian legume tree with 2n=52 chromosomes (Atchison 1948). It is endemic throughout Hawai'i's main islands from sea level to 2300 m elevation. Koa is prized for its beautiful wood and is used for variety of wood products (Whitesell 1990). Koa provides a sustainable economic resource for Hawai'i's forest industries and an ecosystem for many endang...

Effects of fertilisation on phosphorus pools in the volcanic soil of a managed tropical forest

Acacia koa forests benefit from phosphorus fertilisation, but it is unknown if fertilisation is a short or long term effect on P availability. Past research suggests that P cycling in soils with high P sorption capacity, such as Andisols, was through organic pathways. We studied leaf P and soil P fractions in a tropical forest Andisol for 3 years after fertilisation with triple super phosphate. ...
